Shiera Sanders

Biography

Life in Egypt

Princess Chay-Ara lived in ancient Egypt during the reign of Ramesses II, where she shared a deep and eternal love with Prince Khufu. Their lives took a fateful turn when the two discovered a mysterious alien metal buried in the sands — a strange, radiant substance that would one day be known as Nth metal. With the help of the champion Teth-Adam, the metal was forged into a ceremonial blade and returned to the Temple of Horus. But the blade was used for betrayal.

A corrupt priest named Hath-Set murdered both Chay-Ara and Khufu with the enchanted weapon. The metal’s unique properties bound their souls together, setting them on an unending cycle of reincarnation throughout time.

Across centuries, Chay-Ara would live many lives under different names, including Lady Celia Penbrook, the noblewoman of medieval England; Cinnamon, the gunslinging vigilante of the American frontier; and Shelia Carr, a war nurse during World War I, but the whole time she was unaware of the truth buried deep within her spirit.

“Katar Hol, my darling. How I’ve waited for the day we would be reunited.”

Justice Society

That changed in the 1940s, when she was reborn as Shiera Sanders, a brilliant archaeologist. During her work, she encountered Carter Hall, another archaeologist, and the moment they met something ancient stirred inside her. Carter had already remembered his past lives as Khufu and Hawkman, and when Shiera came into his life, her own memories returned. Reclaiming her identity, she adopted the mantle of Hawkgirl and joined Carter as his partner in battle and in love.

Together, Hawkgirl and Hawkman became founding members of the Justice Society of America, fighting side by side in their shared quest for justice. Their reincarnated enemy, Hath-Set — now taking the form of Nazi scientist Anton Hastor — resurfaced to take their lives once more, and the two lovers fell in battle, once again bound by death and destined to return.

Justice League

Years later, Shiera’s soul would find new life in Shayera Thol, a Thanagarian peace officer sent to Earth with her partner Katar Hol. Unlike past incarnations, Shayera had no knowledge of her ancient life as Chay-Ara. She and Katar joined the Justice League under the guise of being Earth’s allies, but in truth, they were scouts, sent to determine the planet’s defenses ahead of a Thanagarian invasion.

As Katar’s interactions with Earth’s heroes began to awaken his memories of past lives — including his time as Carter Hall — Shayera remained in the dark. This created a rift between them, as Katar’s awakening set him on a path away from his Thanagarian mission. When he turned against the invasion and sought to stop it, Shayera found herself on the opposite side of the war. She brutally opposed her former lover but was knocked unconscious in their skirmish. She awoke later, imprisoned by those who were once her friends.

Her memories came back to her slowly, to the point where she was finally released and rejoined the League. Carter and her fell back in love and had a son by the name of Hector Hall.
