Early Life
David Hyde is raised as a child with a strict, survivalist philosophy. He idolizes his father and is taught to distrust others, live by revenge, and take what he wants.
David becomes a skilled mercenary and pirate with a deep-rooted loyalty to his father, a former member of the rogue naval group known as the Manta Crew. Together they search the ocean deeps for anything that may be of worth.
On one such mission, David came across the hidden Atlantean kingdom of Xebel. There he fell in love with a woman by the name of Lucia. She quickly realized the evil that was in David’s heart and left him not knowing that she was pregnant at the time.
This caused David to develop a hate for all Atlanteans, a place he had seen thanks to Lucia. David would start working with Dr. Stephen Shin doing work-for-hire, procuring hard to get items in an effort to learn more about Atlantis and hopefully lead him back to Lucia.
The Feud Begins
One day, David is contracted by Dr. Stephen Shin to retrieve a blood sample from Arthur Curry, under the belief that Arthur is part Atlantean. The belief that the boy is Atlantean intrigues him and he forgoes his usual fee.
The job, intended to be quiet and efficient, unravels when David breaks into the Curry home and is caught in the act, by Tom Curry. During the resulting fight, the young boy Arthur unknowingly activates his powers, throwing David from the house and into the stormy night. David flees back to his father’s fishing boat, which becomes the site of a tragic misunderstanding.
Arthur, believing David’s father to be the same attacker, boards the boat during a storm and causes the mast to collapse on him. David pleads for Arthur to help him but Arthur leaves telling him to ask the sea for mercy. David’s father, gravely injured and refusing to be a burden in the worsening storm, takes his own life before David can save him.

Blaming Arthur for his father’s death, David begins a personal vendetta, taking on the name of Black Manta to honor his father. He uses Atlantean technology and salvaged artifacts to forge a specialized combat suit, complete with energy-based eye beams, retractable blades made from Atlantean steel, and a jetpack for aerial mobility. His sole mission becomes destroying Arthur Curry.
He learns from Dr. Shin that Arthur is in Greece and confronts him. He attacks him with a mix of fury and precision. The battle is intense, revealing the depth of Manta’s enhancements and his hatred. During the fight, Manta accuses Arthur of killing his father, revealing the circumstances of his death and blaming Arthur’s decision to leave them stranded during the storm.
After Manta is defeated, he tells Arthur the truth about Dr. Shin sending him to his home that night. As Arthur leaves to confront Shin, Manta vows that the feud is far from over. Despite Arthur’s attempts at reconciliation, Manta refuses forgiveness, declaring eternal enmity. His final warning to Arthur is clear: their battle is just beginning, and Black Manta will not rest until he has his revenge.
