Early Life
Arthur Curry, the son of a lighthouse keeper named Tom Curry and a mysterious woman named Lana was born in Amnesty Maine on January 29, 1979. He grew up not knowing anything of his secret origins
When Arthur was 2 years old his mother vanished mysteriously and leaves Tom to raise Arthur alone. Over time, Arthur begins to exhibit extraordinary abilities: strength, durability, and a deep connection to the ocean and its creatures. An incident involving bullies and a telepathic link with aquarium fish reveals the full extent of his gifts, hinting at a heritage beyond the surface world.
Learning to Swim
Years later, one of Tom’s old friends, marine biologist Dr. Stephen Shin visits the Curry’s, as Arthur leaves for the day. Arthur spends the day using his abilities in secret and rescuing sailors and those in peril on the ocean. That night he returns exhausted and crashes in his bed. He awakes to a loud crash, and discovers someone attempting to break-in but he is able to drives off the intruder, only for Tom to suffer a fatal heart attack in the chaos. Devastated and seeking justice, Arthur hunts down the attacker, to a ship that left port even in a terrible storm. The terrible weather conditions cause Arthur to mistake the attacker for his father and inadvertently causes his death. Arthur leaves the boat with no knowledge of what his actions have caused.
Days later, Arthur receives in the mail a letter from Dr. Shin asking Tom to reconsider letting him help Arthur with his powers. Driven by grief and confusion, Arthur eventually turns to Shin for help and he confirms Arthur’s hybrid heritage and conducts experiments, revealing that Arthur’s abilities are tied to his exposure to water. Arthur is lead to believe information on his mother can be found in Greece so he travels there.
In Greece, Arthur clashes with the man who killed his father once again. Going by the name Manta, he reveals he was the original intruder and Arthur killed his father. After a duel on the beach, Arthur defeats Manta and learns that Shin had manipulated them both, that Shin was behind Manta’s original attack.
Arthur enraged leaves Greece and returns to Shin’s lab. Arthur, not wanting Shin to have information on him destroys the research and walks away from the betrayal, choosing to use his powers with integrity and purpose.
Arthur is approached by a mysterious man named Vulko. Vulko informs him that his mother, Lana is actually Queen Atlanna of Atlantis and that she has died. Arthur learns he is heir to the throne of Atlantis. Vulko pleads for Arthur to come with him. He agrees and travels to Atlantis, determined to honor both his parents and forge his own legacy.

“I am AQUAMAN– the king of the seven seas. This is my birthright. This is my responsibility. And I will embrace it.”

The King Below
Guided by Vulko, Arthur Curry ventures into the ocean depths and discovers Atlantis for the first time. There, he meets Orm, the current king and Arthur’s half-brother, who greets him warmly but explains that tradition requires Arthur to prove his lineage through the Trials of Atlantis. Arthur succeeds in three trials testing strength, wit, and compassion, and is crowned king. However, the title weighs heavily on him as he struggles to gain respect from the Atlantean court.
Arthur’s outsider status and lack of political experience fuel suspicion among the nobility and military. Orm secretly undermines Arthur’s authority by highlighting his human heritage and perceived weakness. When Arthur mercifully redirects a lost nuclear submarine rather than destroying it, Orm arranges for the vessel to suffer a catastrophic reactor failure, spreading radiation through Atlantean waters. Public opinion turns against Arthur, and Orm invokes the Rite of Combat, challenging Arthur to a duel for the throne.
Unwilling to kill his brother, Arthur loses the duel when Orm uses a hidden weapon to wound him. Arthur is exiled from Atlantis and left to drift in the open ocean. He is found by Mera, a warrior who served Arthur’s mother when she was queen. Mera reveals that to reclaim the throne, Arthur must find the mythical Trident of Poseidon. She produces a stolen device from the archives that holds the key to the Trident’s location.
Ancient records guide them to ruins in the Aegean Sea, where they learn of the Sunken City of the Sirens. In the dead city, they face psychic attacks that trap them in visions of their deepest fears. Arthur breaks free from a vision of his father’s disappointment, while Mera escapes a nightmare of Atlantis in ruins. Working together, Mera shields them with her hydrokinetic powers, and they discover the final clue pointing to the Trench of Lost Souls.

At the bottom of the trench, Arthur finds an ancient temple containing the Trident of Poseidon. The weapon tests him with a vision of himself as a tyrant, offering unlimited power to dominate both the surface and the sea. Arthur rejects this path, choosing justice over vengeance. The Trident accepts him as worthy and reveals the truth: Orm murdered their mother, Queen Atlanna, to seize the throne. Arthur also discovers King Atlan’s ceremonial armor and dons it, fully accepting his role as king.
Meanwhile, Orm declares himself “Ocean Master” and prepares Atlantis for war against the surface world. When Arthur and Mera return to the city, they find Orm’s forces mobilized. Arthur summons creatures from across the ocean to aid him, including whales, giant squids, and sharks, overwhelming Orm’s army without bloodshed. He confronts Orm in the throne room, and they battle with their tridents. Arthur defeats Orm and holds the Trident at his brother’s throat.
Despite the revelation of Orm’s crimes and his own rage, Arthur refuses to execute his brother, choosing instead to imprison him and allow justice to be served through trial. This act of mercy demonstrates his fitness to rule. The Atlantean court, including General Murk, acknowledges Arthur as the rightful king. Arthur takes his place on the Pearl Throne with Mera at his side, embracing his role as a bridge between the surface world and Atlantis.
