Alan Scott

Biography

Early Life

Alan Scott was born in Metropolis in 1912, long before the world would come to know him as one of its first superheroes.

In 1939, while working as an engineer, Alan was caught in a devastating train wreck, an incident orchestrated to kill him. Miraculously, he survived, saved by the power of a mystical green lantern unearthed from the wreckage. The lantern spoke to him, revealing an ancient magic and gifting him with extraordinary abilities. Inspired by the object that saved his life, Alan fashioned a costume and began calling himself the Green Lantern.

Justice Society

In 1940, as tensions escalated in Europe and word spread that Adolf Hitler was searching for a mystical artifact known as the Spear of Destiny, President Franklin D. Roosevelt called upon the help of two known “mystery men” — the Green Lantern and the Flash, Jay Garrick. Together, Alan and Jay infiltrated a Nazi-occupied castle in Scotland, believing Hitler would be there. Instead, they were ambushed by a monstrous war robot known as the Murder Machine. Overpowered and captured, the two heroes were transported to Berlin where Hitler publicly paraded their unconscious bodies. Revealing that he already possessed the Spear of Destiny, Hitler used it to summon an army of Norse Valkyries to ensure his dominion over the world.

Alan was freed when Jay managed to break his restraints. The two fought valiantly against the Valkyries but were quickly overwhelmed. At their breaking point, they were saved by the timely arrival of the Spectre, a mystical force who had sensed the spear’s activation. The Spectre had gathered a small team of mystery men to stop Hitler’s magical onslaught. With their combined strength, Alan and the others pushed back the Valkyrie forces and escaped Berlin. Upon returning to the United States, the group of heroes formed the Justice Society of America, pledging to protect truth and justice during a time of global uncertainty.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in late 1941, the United States formally entered World War II. President Roosevelt established the All-Star Squadron, a wartime initiative that enlisted all active superheroes. The squadron was tasked with defending the U.S. homeland from foreign attacks, while also avoiding Hitler’s mystical influence, as the Spear of Destiny still gave him sway over magical and supernatural forces.

In 1954, the Justice Society faced its most insidious threat — political paranoia. Alan and the other members were summoned before the House Un-American Activities Commission (H.U.A.C.) under suspicion of Communist affiliation. The commission demanded they unmask to prove their loyalty. Alan, along with the rest of the Society, refused. Rather than compromise their identities and beliefs, they chose to disband, stepping away from the public eye.

Though time passed, Alan barely aged, a side effect of the mystical green energy that empowered him. Decades later, he fell in love with a woman named Alyx Florin. Unbeknownst to him, Alyx was actually Rose Canton, a troubled woman with a dangerous alternate personality. On their wedding night, her darker persona surfaced, resulting in a fire that burned their home to the ground. Alan believed she had perished in the flames, not realizing that this chapter of his life would later return in unexpected ways.

“And I shall shed my light over dark evil, for the dark things cannot stand the light… the light of the Green Lantern!”
